Stevenage
Sitting amongst open farmland, Stevenage was a small market town until 1946, when it was designated Britain’s first New Town.
Divided into neighbourhoods, Stevenage is noted for its parks, leisure facilities and Britain’s first pedestrianised shopping centre. The quaint ´old town´ offers pubs, restaurants and shops.
In recent years the town is most famous for Lewis Hamilton whose family still remain in the town.
Fairlands Valley is a large area of parkland with boating lakes. The town is a very green town, with avenues of trees (typically Norway Maple) throughout but also large woods such as Monks and Whomerley Wood, which is ancient semi-natural woodland.
There is an outdoor market on Wednesday and Saturday and an indoor market Wednesday to Saturday.
Visiting Stevenage by Green Line 797, with coaches every hour to the town, is easy and great value for money.
