Ware

Once a major centre for brewing, this delightful town is set on the navigable section of the River Lea. The town has many historic buildings including old coaching inns, 18th century riverside gazebos and the unique flint and shell decorated Scott´s Grotto. Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen in the town in 1553, but only reigned for nine days.

The Ware Museum is an independent museum featuring the Story of Ware, including the Roman town and malting industry and a World War II command bunker and changing exhibitions. Exhibits include a roman coffin (with skeleton!) and part of the coverlet from the Great Bed of Ware. Also a medieval well and a World War II Command Bunker with interactive display.

The Ware Priory is a Grade I Listed building.  The Priory stands in 7 acres of picturesque riverside grounds.  Founded as a Franciscan Friary in 1338 it became a private house until World War I when it was used as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers. The Priory was given to the town in 1920 by Mrs Anne Elizabeth Croft.

Ware is easy to reach using Green Line 724 service.
